European Adventure 2025: Day (40) Back in the USA

My “European Adventure” has officially ended and boy was it fun!! From a whirlwind start in Stockholm to a slow end in Besançon many countries have been visited and tens of thousands of steps walked in so many cities of the old continent we call Europe!! It has been a dream vacation on so many fronts: buoyant city streets, beautiful beaches, rugged and beautiful hikes and nice people everywhere and at all times of the day and very safe streets!
There are people who like to plan things to the minute and there are people who go with the flow, I fit in the second group : go with the flow!! I don’t wake up with a to-do list, I just do things as they come! I recall an office mate in grad school who wouldn’t talk to me because I was not on his list for the day!! Talking to me was not an item on his list!!!! That was shocking to me then, it still is today. My strength lies in adjusting to the changing tasks of the day! When on vacation, I just go with flow … Yes there are some landmarks and key places to see in every city but I don’t see them in any particular order like, 1,2, 3… just let things flow!!

From Stockholm to Prague, things were moving fast and furious but then I hit the slowdown button in Paris and recouped my energy before the one week energy sink in Crete where  a slow day at the beach was followed by a high energy day on a wild beach or a park, like Samaria Gorge!! Besançon was awesome as it offered hiking paths and city walks with beautiful streets and parks !!

Making reservations when tired can be bad for your wallet as one is less alert to mistakes and artificial intelligence trying to guess what you want when typing, and it did happen to me in Berlin .. trying to buy a train ticket to Dresden from Berlin late at night, well I ended up buying a ticket from Munich to Dresden instead… I found out the next day I had the wrong ticket because my train never showed up and my hotel room was already reserved so I had to buy a new ticket at the station and I was off to Dresden few hours later than planned. Oh well I said, lesson learned !! Yesterday was also eventful as I missed my train to Paris from Besançon, why? Because they have three train stations in the same city and I went to the wrong one!!! Again, I had to buy new ticket at the station for another train… so paying attention online and checking your documents are two important things I learned this time … the monetary cost was minimal but the time wasted was not ..

Traveling is my middle name and I have lots of far away places yet to see so … I will see you all virtually on my next trip!!!  Here are pictures from my various stops this trip

European Adventure 2025: Day (38) TOUR DE FRANCE

There is no better ending to my vacation than watching the bikers of the Tour de France zoom by at high speeds. I have always wanted to watch the tour de France somewhere along their path but it never happened until today. May be the secret to a good vacation is to not have any plan which is exactly what I did this summer. I basically bought a one way ticket to Stockholm and the rest followed, Oslo, Tallinn, Helsinki, Warsaw, Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Paris, Crete, Paris, Besançon, Paris again !! The Tour de France is the bonus I always dreamed of and today it happened .. We found out yesterday that the tour will be passing close to Besançon so we made plans to be on the path of the race…  It took us about a 45 minutes drive from Besançon to run into its path.. and voila… we were with the crowds  waiting patiently for the peloton of bikers de show up … we sat there for at least 2 hours before cars belonging to TV stations, radios, marketing people started streaming through before the breakaway biker showed up solo followed minutes later by a small group of bikers and then a much bigger group .. the yellow jersey biker was in the middle of it all… well protected by his teammates… by now the rain has been steady to hard rain and i was getting a little cold too.. Once the big peloton passed, we headed back to town. I was so happy to take the Tour de France off my to do list ✅  … Tomorrow I head to Paris again and may be see the tour end in the Champs Élysée ???   Who knows …

A sleepy town on our way …

European Adventure 2025: Day (37) Besançon

My friend and I got a late start today as we both needed a well deserved rest. This has been a walking vacation for sure, I have averaged 15000 steps a day for the whole month… By the end of each day, my feet ache really bad  from all the walking I do. Today was no different… After a great Kebob lunch followed by coffee downtown we set out for our longest walk yet… Our hike took us to the top of one of the many peaks surrounding Besançon… from there we had amazing views of  the valley below… all over our hiking path we were enjoying lots of delicious fruits, black berries, raspberries, apples…. and more… it was amazing!! All this was along the hiking trail .. we came back home to shower and rest before going out to dinner in an italian pizza place!  My friend knew the owner so we were in good hands… the pizza was great…

Here are some pics from today …

European Adventure 2025: Day(36) Besançon

To discover this beautiful medieval city, my friend and I to go for a long walk following waterways and parks to get protection from the summer sun. I learned from my friend that famous scientists like Fourier and others called this city home in addition to famous writer Victor Hugo!! Statues of them are all over town. The city is also known for beautiful parks that attracts lots of hikers and bikers alike. The beautiful medieval architecture is all over the place. I also learned that renovations are only allowed inside buildings, the façades cannot be touched!! Nested between all these buildings are parks, and plazas.. Our 11 mile walk included the banks of the Besançon river, with lots of bikers so one needs to be alert. Here are some pictures of Besançon landmarks…

European Adventure 2025: Day (35) Besançon

After resting in Paris for a day, I decided to move on to my next destination, Besançon France. One of my high school friends lives there so it is fitting to pay him a visit. To get to Besançon I took the high speed train, TGV, which is awesome. I sat next to a meteorologist and as always I started a conversation with him which went on for the entire trip, making the trip go by fast. The discussion, in French, centered around weather prediction in France and Europe in general. My technical French language is rough but my general French language is just fine… the TGV trip from Paris to Besançon took two hours and a half, which is fast.. Besançon is near the Suisse border. My friend was waiting for me at the station. We headed to his beautiful home to drop my bags and have some late lunch.. He proudly showed me his beautiful yard full of all sorts of flowers and fruiting trees. I even had my first fresh fig of the year from his garden and some tiny black grapes…
