Patagonia: Perito Morino Glacier

It is 10:30 pm now and it is still light outside, that is a sign that we are way south of the equator and it is summer time in the Southern Hemisphere... well today was an exciting day as we had our first organized tour to the biggest glacier in Patagonia and one of the biggest in the world outside Antarctica! The glacier sits in a valley between two high peaks of the Andes mountains and is near the Chilean border. The glacier is also at the western end of beautiful Lake Argentina. We had a whole crash course on the formation of the glacier and I am sure you can find it on google as well... the bottom line is: IT IS AWESOME !!!! I have never seen a glacier before except on TV so for me and my friend it was a big WOW!!! The sheer power of nature was on display in this place.. how trillions of snow flakes over 100s of years created this monster is not easy to comprehend but that is what it is pure and simple!! With all the built up pressure and shear forces, one hears lots of sudden explosions coming from chunks of ice crashing into the lake or big cracks developing between layers... I could sit there for hours enjoying the various sounds coming off the ice... some sounded like gun shots... there was a Big Bang that reverberated within the valley. After walking all over the place looking at the various sides of the glacier, we ended the day with  boat ride that took us even closer to the glacier... everyone on the boat was hoping to see a big chunk of ice come of and crash in the lake but nothing happened until we we were back on terra firma then a big piece of ice came off ... of well too late we said..

Enjoy the pictures that do not need any description of mine... tomorrow El Chalten!
